Serengeti Destination
Southern Serengeti
The birthplace of the Migration, featuring the short-grass plains and the calving grounds of Ndutu.
The South Serengeti is the birthplace of the Great Migration. Defined by its vast, treeless short-grass plains, this region stretches from the Naabi Hill gate down to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area boundary. It is a land of infinite horizons and the critical stage for the start of the annual migration cycle.
The Calving Season: The Cradle of Life
The South Serengeti, particularly the area around Ndutu, is the epicenter of the natural world from late December to March. This is the calving season, where an estimated 8,000 wildebeest are born every single day. The nutrient-rich grasses of the Southern Serengeti Plains, fueled by volcanic ash from the nearby highlands, provide the perfect nursery for the young calves.
This abundance of life naturally attracts an incredible concentration of predators. It is the best time of year to see cheetahs hunting on the open plains, as the lack of cover allows for spectacular high-speed chases. Large prides of lions and packs of hyenas are also a constant presence, taking advantage of the seasonal bounty.
Soda Lakes and Hidden Gems
The landscape is dotted with alkaline lakes such as Lake Masek, Lake Lagarja, and Lake Ndutu. these lakes are vital water sources and often attract thousands of flamingos, creating a stunning pink hue against the blue water. For those looking for a more remote experience, the Hidden Valley and the Matiti Plains offer pristine wilderness where you can encounter wildlife far from other vehicles.

Best Time to Visit
The South Serengeti is a strictly seasonal destination. While wildlife can be found year-round, the region truly shines between late December and early April. This is when the "short grass" is green and the migration is at its most concentrated. Outside of these months, the area becomes very dry, and many of the herds move north toward the central and western reaches of the park.
