Nyasirori River: The Western Marshland Sanctuary

The Nyasirori River (also known as the Nyasirori Marsh) is a key ecological feature of the Serengeti's Western Corridor. Located west of the central plains, it is a region characterized by thick riverine vegetation, seasonal marshes, and fertile floodplains. It is one of the most secluded and wildlife-rich corners of the west.

The river is particularly famous for its permanent marshes, which provide a sanctuary for hippos and a wide variety of water birds, including the rare saddle-billed stork and goliath heron. During the Great Migration (May to June), the Nyasirori area becomes a vital stopping point for the herds as they move towards the Grumeti River.

A Predator's Paradise

The dense cover provided by the Nyasirori marsh and surrounding woodlands makes it an ideal habitat for lions and the elusive leopard. The Western Corridor prides that inhabit this area are known for their size and ability to hunt large prey like buffalo and wildebeest in the soft, marshy ground.
