Nanyuki River: The Central artery

The Nanyuki River is a critical seasonal stream that feeds into the Seronera River system in the central heart of Serengeti National Park. The name Nanyuki refers to the 'red' color of the river's water when it is in high flow after rain in the nearby hills. It is one of the most reliable areas for wildlife viewing in the central plains.

The river valley is dominated by emerald-green Fever Trees and large Acacias, providing the perfect habitat for tree-climbing leopards. During the dry season, the Nanyuki often dries down to scattered pools, which attract a high density of resident game including giraffes, impalas, and large prides of lions.

Wildlife Concentration

Because the Nanyuki flows through the nutrient-rich central plains, it is a favored grazing ground for zebras and wildebeest throughout most of the year. The river's loops and banks create numerous ambush points for predators, making it a hotspot for those looking to witness predator-prey interactions.
