Moru Kopjes: The Stronghold of the Black Rhino

Located in the south-central region of the Serengeti, the Moru Kopjes are perhaps the most visually stunning and ecologically significant rock formations in the park. These massive granite outcrops rise dramatically from the plains, providing a stark contrast to the surrounding grasslands. Moru is not only a scenic masterpiece but also serves as the primary sanctuary for the Serengeti's remaining population of the critically endangered black rhinoceros.

The name "Moru" translates to "old" or "grey" in the Maasai language, referring to the ancient nature of these rocks. Beyond their wildlife importance, the kopjes hold deep cultural significance and offer a glimpse into the ancient history of the region.

The Black Rhino Sanctuary

While the Serengeti's rhinoceros population was nearly decimated by poaching in the late 20th century, a dedicated protection program centered on the Moru Kopjes has seen a slow but steady recovery. The rugged terrain and thick vegetation surrounding the kopjes provide the perfect habitat for these shy and solitary browsers.

Visitors to Moru have the highest chance in the park of spotting a rhino, particularly in the early morning hours. Specialist "Rhino Rangers" monitor the population 24/7, and several dedicated tracks allow visitors to explore the area where they are most frequently seen. Spotting a black rhino here is often considered the "crown jewel" of a Serengeti safari.

Cultural Heritage and History

Moru Kopjes are as much a cultural site as they are a wildlife destination. For centuries, the Maasai people used these outcrops for various traditional purposes. Today, visitors can explore two significant historical features:

• Masai Rock Paintings: Tucked into a sheltered overhang on one of the larger kopjes, these ancient paintings depict shields, people, and wildlife, painted using ochre, charcoal, and white clay. They provide a fascinating connection to the pastoralist tribes that once roamed these lands freely.
• Gong Rocks: This unique geological feature consists of rocks that, when struck with a smaller stone, produce a metallic, musical sound. It is believed these were used by the Maasai as a communication tool or for traditional rituals and celebrations.

The Predator Island

Like many kopje formations in the Serengeti, Moru acts as a magnet for big cats. The elevation provides lions and leopards with an ideal vantage point to survey the surrounding plains for potential prey. The dense thickets at the base of the rocks also offer perfect denning sites for mothers with cubs. It is common to see several lion prides "island hopping" between the various kopje clusters in this region.

Geography and Access

Moru Kopjes are located south of the Seronera Valley, making them an excellent full-day excursion for those staying in the central region. The area is slightly more remote than the main Seronera tracks, meaning you will often encounter fewer vehicles and enjoy a more exclusive safari experience. The scenery here is often cited by photographers as the most beautiful in the entire park due to the dramatic silhouettes of the rocks against the vast African sky.
