Kusini

Kusini is a remote and stunningly beautiful region located in the southwestern corner of the Serengeti National Park. The name "Kusini" is the Swahili word for "South," and this area perfectly encapsulates the rugged, wild, and often solitary safari experience that seasoned travelers crave. Characterized by a mosaic of open short-grass plains and dense woodland thickets, Kusini offers a diverse habitat that supports a high density of resident wildlife throughout the year, far beyond the seasonal peaks of the Great Migration.

The Cheetah and Predator Stronghold

The geography of Kusini, with its transition from open plains to woodland, makes it a premier territory for Africa’s big cats. During the months of January to March, Kusini plays a critical role in the wider Southern Serengeti calving season. While the massive herds are often concentrated around Ndutu to the east, significant numbers of wildebeest and zebra filter into the secret vales and hidden plains of Kusini. The nutrient-rich grasses here support the newborns, and the relative lack of vehicle traffic compared to central Seronera makes it an ideal spot for those wanting to witness the miracles of the migration in comparative peace. The region is also dotted with diverse waterholes that attract elephants and large Cape buffalo herds even in the drier months.

The Solitary Safari Experience

One of the greatest draws of Kusini is its exclusivity. Because it is situated away from the main tourist arteries, the vehicle density is remarkably low. This allows for long, uninterrupted game drives where you might be the only observers of a pride of lions or a cheetah family.
