Central Serengeti

The Central Serengeti, often referred to as the Seronera region, is the beating heart of the park. This vast area is defined by its classic African savannah scenery: wide-open grasslands dotted with iconic umbrella acacia trees and majestic granite outcrops known as kopjes. It is widely considered the "Big Cat Capital" of the world, offering unparalleled opportunities to see lions, leopards, and cheetahs in their natural habitat.

The Seronera Valley: A Year-Round Oasis

The defining feature of this region is the Seronera Valley. Unlike much of the park, which follows a strict seasonal cycle, the Seronera River and its tributaries provide a permanent water source that sustains a massive population of resident wildlife. This makes the Central Serengeti a spectacular year-round destination, as large herds of buffalo, giraffe, elephant, and waterbuck never stray far from the riverbanks.

For those interested in aquatic life, the Retina Hippo Pool is a must-visit. Located at the confluence of the Seronera and Orangi rivers, it is one of the best places in Africa to observe massive pods of hippos—sometimes numbering over 200—jostling for space in the deep water.

The Land of the Predators

The combination of permanent water and vast grasslands makes this the premier hunting ground for Africa's large predators. The Simba Kopjes, a cluster of ancient granite boulders, provides the perfect vantage point for lion prides to survey the plains. Similarly, the Maasai Kopjes and Makoma Hill are legendary spots for finding leopards and cheetahs. To the south, the Moru Kopjes rise dramatically from the plains, offering refuge to the Serengeti’s remaining black rhino population and featuring ancient Maasai rock art at Gong Rock.

While the Central Serengeti is a fantastic year-round destination, it reaches a peak of activity during the Great Migration. Typically in April, May, and June, the "Central Corridor" becomes a massive transit route for over a million wildebeest and zebra as they move north. They return again in November and December, creating a cacophony of sound and movement that is truly awe-inspiring. During these periods, the predator activity reaches its zenith as lions and hyenas follow the moving feast.
